I know what you mean about Mahler, R_M, and the more recent you get in 'classical' music the more that applies. For instance some modern composers (whose names I've never even bothered to find out) have written pieces with the violins bowing the strings on the wrong side of the bridge - a truly cacophonous racket. But some of Mahler's music, for example the Adagio from his 5th symphony, is truly beautiful.

Krzystopf Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima for 52 Strings is much like that. He used a style of graphic notation when writing it that called for all notes in a certain range to be played at any given time, as well as various percussive and other unorthodox techniques, including, as you mentioned, bowing on the wrong side of the bridge.

I don't like that type of modern music at all either, but Sibelius I love.

Ed, your taste in music sounds very similar to my son's.  I am really not into heavy metal myself.

I love so much of it, it's hard to decide. But, if I had to listen to only one composer's music forever, it might be (viva...)Vivaldi!

Probably not an appropriate thread for me to contribute to, due to my tone dimness (not quite deaf - I do know the notes go up and down, but not much memory), but for me, the Beatles and Grieg.  I actually enjoy most music (except rap and opera) when someone else plays it, but I just about never think of turning it on.

Like others, my iTunes is set to random, so a variety of music is playing when I am working at the computer or playing Lexigame.  However, the artists I have and enjoy are:

Fela Kuti
Yes
Pink Floyd
Rolling Stones
Crack The Sky
Tea Party
The The
Tears For Fears
Frank Zappa
Roxy Music
Radio Head
Ozric Tentacles
Nouvelle Vague
Neil Young
Love Tractor
Lou Reed
Jeff Beck
Foo Fighters
Eric Clapton
David Bowie
Cat Power
Booker T and the MGs
The Beta Band
Beatles
Allman Brothers
Atomic Rooster

and many more.........

Music is a very powerful energy.  If I hear a song that I was listening to maybe twenty years ago, all of the feelings and emotions that I was experiencing all of those years ago will come flooding back.......

I love music......

Peace to all.......

Hi Jay,
Nice to hear from you.
I know what you mean about music being emotive.
I can hear a song and it's like being in an episode of Quantum Leap...i am transported back and can hear the sounds, smell the aromas, feel the sun on my face almost....

It is magical stuff..music...no doubt about that.

Take care.

When I was about 10 (lo these many eons ago!) my father bought a Hi-Fi (monorail) and they gave him a demo record to show off the sound qualities of the system.  It was Beethoven's third symphony (the Eroica).  I was hooked on the spot even though no one else in my family cared for it.  Its been Classical ever since (with many favorites, but may Prokofiev at the top) plus some new ageish melodic piano or guitar.

BTW, another favorite is the Swingle Singers.  Anyone here ever hear them?  Eight voices in close harmony, no instruments, doing all kinds of music.

They say ignorance and apathy are the two great evils of modern life.  Well, I wouldn't know about that and I don't care anyway.

The Swingle Singers? But of course! I have a couple of their albums (vinyl only): Going Baroque and Swingle Bells. I just love their harmonies. Along those same lines -- the King's Singers, especially their version of You Are a New Day.

My favorite Beethoven symphony is 5; I love, love, love the Moonlight Sonata; and I tortured my family with many passionate renditions of Für Elise as a teenage piano player. Like you, I have many favorites, but I would put J. S. Bach at the very tip top of my list.

Every time I hear Fur Elise I cringe a little. I have heard those 9 notes faaaaaaaaaar too many times. However, Beethoven's Eroica and his lesser known Second sympony are two of my favourite classical pieces. I also love Shostakovich. His seventh symphony is amazing.

Now to link that to my rubbish music.

A lot of the metal that I listen to is heavily (no pun intended) influenced by the music of the classical and romantic periods. Children of Bodom, for example, use a Neo-Classical approach in terms of melodies and guitar/synth lines, and Nightwish can only be described as operatic metal. Almost all metal owes something to the music of Wagner, as his expansion of the bass section in orchestras coupled with his excessive use of minor harmonies and modes has created the foundation for the harmonic stylings of many many metal bands.

The Promontory track on the soundtrack for "Last of the Mohicans" -- one of the most stirring compositions, indeed the whole movie and soundtrack is truly amazing .... a true modern masterwork! (Even if it didn't stick to the book!)

Lately I've been listening to Pink Floyd, Faith No More, Nirvana, R.E.M, Procol Harum (Whiter Shade of Pale) and Van Morrison (Brown Eyed Girl). Can never get sick of the last two, if I had to choose a favourite, those two songs would be mine.
