roberts   is correct.

Surely the first decade was 1 - 10;  the last decade of the first century was 91 - 100.

Therefore, the decade in question here is 2001 through 2010.

However, all the news media are referring to the "new" decade as beginning with 2010.  Surely this doesn't make it correct.

I think this notion arises from the idea that all the years in a particular decade should have the same  penultimate  numeral, in the case of the decade in question, it was, of course, zero.

While most people celebrated 2000 as the beginning of the twenty-first century,  2000 was really the last year of the twentieth century.

Thank you for noting that I  "seem to be a very analytical kind of dude".  Most of the work I have done has had a strong analytical thread.

Regarding the question whether the implication that Jesus Christ was one year old on the day he was born,  I have heard statements implying that his birth year was not exactly known and that he may have been born as early as 4 BC.  I certainly do not consider that I am well versed in this matter; I'm sure this is a question about which much has been written.

I know that works for centuries/millennia, but I've never see the decade counted that way - we talk about the twenties or the thirties.

Hey AQ...you kind of put it a bit better than I did...

I was watching a doco on the life of JC in which it was said that they had no way of knowing exactly when JC was born - some time after the event they just 'drew a line in the sand'.

They could have just as easily drawn this line at any arbitrary point.

I sometimes wonder what JC would make of what has been done over the centuries in his name...

I have wondered the same thing.

Imagine if He were to witness a gathering at which this question was considered.  It is my impression that there would be a great multitude of opinions rendered.

Well...thank goodness we were not sat around a dining table...there would have been a food fight....[shame actually..that would have been fun..!!]

AQ..the last decade have been labelled the 'noughties'  as opposed to the naughties..at least over here that is..

So glad to hear from everyone...

Healthy Anonsi ?...i have been ill since Boxing Day, so i know where you're coming from....

I'm glad the decade is over too...perhaps this next one will be an improvement-although knowing my luck!!!???

As to the aliens..perhaps with your latest experiences you 2 could revive our titleless story, and regale us with your exploits....

Enjoy everyone....

I agree with AQ and Roberts. We celebrated the new millennium a year early simply because the number at the front changed and we were all sucked in by the media hype. There's a surprise.

I wonder what we'll call the second decade. Will it be the 'teens', the 'tenties'...?

You are correct.  It's  "noughties"  NOT  "naughties".

What could I have been thinking?
