I've commented before on the over-zealous censorship applied to the solution lists for the "Target Puzzle" in the Age newspaper. (See Whore today, gone tomorrow.) A letter to the paper on Saturday, from Alan Pritchard of Halls Gap, tackled this issue, complaining about the recent exclusion of whore, anal, penile and clitoris. However, he noted that hymen had remained intact in a recent solution! Needless to say, all of these words are accepted in Chihuahua puzzles.

The letter also objected to the omission of words from other languages that have become part of the English language. I won't mention the example he gave, because it is in one of our puzzles today, and of course it is playable in Chihuahua.

Yesterday another correspondent, Derek Andrews from Warrnambool, endorsed these complaints, but added his own gripe about the treatment of plurals. He said that all plural words are excluded, even when they don't end in S, examples being mice, lice and feet. I don't think the newspaper puzzles followed that approach when I used to do them, but perhaps they've changed. I needn't remind forumites of the soul-searching I've gone through in deciding exactly where to draw the line on acceptable vs unacceptable plurals - and now there is an option to allow all plurals in Your puzzles.

No wonder newspaper circulation figures are in decline around the world, while more and more players are flocking to Chihuahua!

Oh, that's why the publishing industry is in such disarray!

Quite ironic, isn't it, that these newspapers and magazines feel the need to protect a relatively tiny proportion of the population from perfectly legitimate words, simply so as not to offend anyone, whereas TV and film companies happily broadcast to the entire world material that contains appalling language.
